Something about UMTS and 3G service...
UMTS - Universal Mobile Telecommunications System represents a key technology for what is called the third generation of mobile communications - 3G With appearance of 3G technology GSM networks outgrow into complex multi service networks that provide use of Internet on mobile phones, which is why that kind of Internet is called Mobile Internet. Mobile Internet represents a combination of mobile and Internet technologies.
3G/HSPA advantages
The biggest advantage of 3G technology is a possibility of sending data and receiving data at rates up to four times higher than those in current GSM/GPRS networks (up to 384 Kb/s). 3G technology also offers, besides a faster data transfer (fast Internet, work and play at any time, in any place), a wide palette of new services among which is a video call as a key service of 3G technology.
High Speed Packet Access or for short HSPA is a technology that represent a new step in evolution of 3G network and as such provides the data transfer at multiple higher rates than those present in UMTS – they amount to 14 Mb/s. In our case we deal with rates up to 3.6 Mb/s. Such a high rate of data transfer essentially facilitates a broadband Internet access, giving you complete freedom and pleasure in access to attractive data and applications.
Necessary conditions for use of 3G service
For use of 3G service it is necessary that you are in the area covered by 3G signal and that you own some 3G phone. For usage of advantages that HSPA offers, you phone must be compatible with this technology.
In case that you already have set and activated parameters for GPRS/MMS service, additional settings for 3G are not required. It is only necessary to adjust settings concerning Network to use of GSM and 3G signals. You are required to restart you phone after that.
- For Nokia phones find this settings in: Tools > Settings > Network > Network mode > Dual mode
In case your phone supports a streaming service, set parameters, because contents of Telenor Media platform, with 3G service represent a real experience.
Video call
Video call is certainly the most popular service provided by 3G technology – two persons making a call at the same moment can also look at each other through their mobile phone displays.
When you have a phone that supports a video call, and you are in the zone of coverage by 3G signal („3G“ icon on the phone display), making of video call is just as simple as making of standard call. The only difference is that, after you enter a number you are calling, you don’t press the button that confirms a standards call, but you press an option for video call. When making a video call, place yourself so you can see your calling party on your phone’s display. We should also mention that voice communication is accomplished trough your phone’s speaker which is automatically activated on this occasion.
In case that somebody makes a video call to you, and you are in the zone covered by 3G signal and you own an appropriate phone, your phone shall indicate that you have an incoming video call (this indication may vary depending on the phone model). To answer a video call, press the appropriate button for video call. Before the call is established, you have a possibility to willingly decide whether your image shall be sent to your calling party during the call or not. In case that you don’t own a 3G phone, you can receive a video call in the usual way, same as any other call.
In case that during a call you or your calling party exit the area covered by 3G signal and enter an area covered by GSM signal, your call shall be interrupted. The only available possibility in this case is to have a standard call to your calling party.
Billing of 3G service
Video call shall be charged based on its duration, same as for standard call, according to the calling zone and your tariff package.
